Since qualitative research came online in the late 1990s, the dominant framework for online qualitative research has been the focus group. However, with the rapid development of new online communication tools such as blogs and the proliferation of compact personal digital devices that can capture critical moments of every day life, it is now possible for both researchers and the organizations they serve to become “immersed” in the actual day-to-day behaviors and emotions of customers.

This session will present and explore the idea of a new framework for conducting qualitative research online:  Immersive Research.  It will define the elements and characteristics of immersive research, describe when it is best applied and demonstrate how the latest online technologies can be combined or “mashed up” with offline contextual research methodologies such as ethnography.   Real world case studies will demonstrate the current work to date of this dynamic and powerful new online qualitative framework.
